YOU CAN DO IT: GOING GREEN

Hobos had it right.

A few weeks ago I found myself thrifting without a bag…

I detest those flimsy plastic shopping bags that stores insist you take. When it comes down to it, I really dislike all single use shopping bags, no matter what they are made of.

For the past five years I have been bringing my own bags to transport goods home.  All goods.  From groceries and clothing to personal care items and electronics.  Even leftover food!  No matter where I shop – farmers market, grocery store, Target, Macy’s, Barnes and Noble, the mall, thrift store, high end boutiques – I always check out with “No bag please.”

…Well, even after five years of bringing my own bag, I still sometimes get caught without one.

Not a problem.

On occasions like these, you need to improvise.

If the item – or items – will fit in my purse, in they go!  You would be amazed at what is in my purse at any given moment.  Sandwich anyone?

These can then be removed when you get to the car so when you are paying at your next stop they don’t think you stole that pair of earrings hiding next to your wallet.  I have a receipt for those.

If it is one large item or several that can be easily stacked, I will just carry them out in my arms.  You know, those two bendable things with grabbers attached at the end.  They are wonderful for transporting goods.  Sans bag.  It’s like nature knew what it was doing.

Sometimes an item you are buying becomes the bag.

Use a pretty scarf rather than a plastic bag to transport goods.

This was the case with my thrift purchases.

I bundled them neatly inside one of the scarves I was purchasing.  This makes a much prettier package than a plastic bag!

A properly folded scarf takes up very little room in your purse – or coat pocket gentlemen.  Store one in there and you always have a “bag” handy!

The book The Wrapping Scarf Revolution gives you all kinds of ideas on how to package and transport goods using only a scarf.  Look for it at your library or local book store and bring your own bag!

Now that life has slowed from a sprint to a steady run, I have been using the extra time to do some much needed house cleaning.  I always feel much more equipped to tackle the challenges ahead when everything is in order.  Or, I am just procrastinating by cleaning rather than the work I should really be doing.  Either way it is nice to have a clean house.

Amidst my top-to-bottom scrubbing and total reorganization I made a startling observation.  I think I am a hoarder.

I hoard garbage.

How else would you explain the stockpiles of cardboard, glass jars, yogurt containers and 112 egg cartons?  Apparently we eat a lot of eggs.

Clearly I have issues throwing things away.

But that is only because they cannot be recycled, will not be recycled and I hate waste.

So I hold on to them.  Clogging my house rather than the landfill.

Just about the time I am ready to call the hoarders’ hotline, I find a use for some of that garbage.

Use cardboard and newspaper for an easy weed-free garden.

The piles of cardboard and newspaper make for an easy weed-free, no-dig garden through sheet mulching.

yogurt container trophy cups

Yogurt containers and solo cups are transformed into trophy centerpieces for a sports banquet.

glass jar centerpieces

Empty spaghetti sauce jars are perfect vases when you need a lot of centerpieces on a budget.

scrap paper flower centerpieces

And scrap paper can be repurposed into floral centerpieces when you have no budget.

Sometimes, when the mountain of crap becomes overwhelming, I just want to pitch it all and have nice clean shelves again.  But as I hover the item over the trash bin or recycling receptacle, I stop and think… I just might be able to reuse this some day.

And that is how I end up with 112 egg cartons.

GREEN YOUR: Scents & Sensibility

Last night Miss M and I went to her Freshmen Science Project Expo where the final results from their class experiments were on display.  The experiments ranged from music effects on heart rate to reactions times while talking on the phone, playing video games or surfing the internet and of course what happens when you [...]

GREEN YOUR: FUNERAL

Thumbnail image for GREEN YOUR: FUNERAL

Until recently I thought cremation was the way to go {literally} when it comes to eco-friendly funerals.  But did you know there is a greener alternative? It’s called green burial or natural burial. The Unites States has 22,500 cemeteries. In them, each year through traditional funerals we bury: 827,060 gallons of embalming fluid 90,272 tons [...]

GREEN YOUR: PERIOD.

Okay, I admit it.  I’m a Diva. Not the prima-donna-attention-hungry-my-way-or-the-highway type {well, maybe a little}, but the DivaCup-wearing-never-have-to-stand-in-line-with-a-box-of-tampons-again kind. WARNING! This post delves deep into world of feminine hygiene.  If you are uncomfortable with words like VAGINA or MENSTRUAL CYCLE, squeal at the thought of BLOOD, thank god you are a MAN and don’t have [...]

GREEN YOUR: SHOWER {DRAIN MAINTENANCE}

Thumbnail image for GREEN YOUR: SHOWER {DRAIN MAINTENANCE}

Last week I had the unpleasant task of unclogging our shower drain.  I know.  Eww, right?  Drano to the rescue?  No way man!  Soap-scummy dirty standing water is gross enough without adding nasty chemicals to the mix.   In a word, YUCK!  As in Mr. Yuk. Chemical drain cleaners are among the most hazardous household [...]

The story of bottled water

Thumbnail image for The story of bottled water

A few weeks ago Mister and I packed up the Chitlins and headed to Iola, WI for the Iola Old Car Show.  In an effort to be more sustainable {and cheap!} we packed our own lunch and beverages.  Food at these type of events is always over-priced and over-packaged.  Water is usually nonexistent, other than [...]

GREEN YOUR: GROCERY SHOPPING

Thumbnail image for GREEN YOUR: GROCERY SHOPPING

Grocery shopping.  Love it or hate, unless you are self-sufficient, we all have to do it.  I know very few people who are self-sufficient and produce all their own food – well actually, I know no one who is self-sufficient producing all their own food – so for most of us that means heading to [...]

Get Reel

Check out my Monday post over at the Green Phone Booth about the wonders of getting real – a reel mower that is. Ahh, Spring. The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, plants are blooming, and grass is growing – and growing, and growing, and growing. Somehow, practically overnight I swear, my lawn became [...]

What to do?

Thumbnail image for What to do?

What’s keeping you from being green?  Time, money, family?  For me it is family.  We do a lot in our house to live sustainably.  Although my husband jokingly refers to me “going Amish”, he has been incredibly supportive and generally a good sport about the craziness that ensues.  There are however some things that are [...]
