GREEN YOUR: KITCHEN {FOOD – EAT LOCAL}

My last CSA day

My last CSA day

My what a summer it has been.  Sadly, nothing says summer is over like your last CSA day.  The leaves are dropping, my garden is dying, I’m wearing tights, and no more farm-fresh veggies will be coming my way.  Bummer.

Being our first foray into Community Supported Agriculture {CSA}, we split a share with another family, receiving our share every other week.  It has been an enlightening 10 weeks, let me tell ya!  Between our garden and the CSA, the three of us – eating mostly vegetarian – had a hard time keeping up.  I can’t imagine what a whole share would be like.  Veggie overload!  You definitely get your money’s worth.

The end of summer calls for celebration, don’t you think?  I didn’t throw a party, but I did wear a party dress.

End of summer celebration

Look at all those yummy veggies!

Oh man, did I score a lot of local loot today!  My CSA {Community Supported Agriculture} had a huge Napa Cabbage in it this week.  Anyone know what to do with it?  Spinach, lettuce, and Kohlrabi made a comeback, along with the usual beets, tomatoes, and jalapeños.  Parsley and winter squash were new.  One leek also made a cameo appearance.  The carrots I purchased at the People’s Food Coop.  The rest of the goodies came from the Farmers Market.

Now to decide what to do with all this yummy stuff.

In other news…. I totally missed my coop’s Eat Local Challenge!  WTH  Not that it matters much, since joining a CSA and planting a garden we’ve been eating local a lot all summer.  Still, I like the challenge of doing more.  The national Eat Local Challenge is coming up in October, I believe.  Will you be participating?  If you’re new to the locavore world, www.eatlocalchallenge.com has an article up right now about it: Five Steps to Eating Local.  I’m also happy to answer any questions.  One of my current projects is developing a website for the Local Foods & Sustainable Agriculture {LFSA} task force of Coulee Partners for Sustainability {CPS}.  LFSA is a group I belong to that formed to connect consumers with local foods by promoting health and well being, community enrichment, and environmental sustainability.  Exciting stuff!

Now I have a mountain of vegetables to put away.  Cheers!

Vacation Day 3 – Yes I can, Can!

Thumbnail image for Vacation Day 3 – Yes I can, Can!

Day three of Mister’s vacation I had to put my foot down and say, “Hell no, I won’t go!  All this galavanting around is wreaking havoc with my housewifery.  The dishes are dirty, laundry is piling up, and my garden is rotting.  I need one day at home to get some things done!”  At least [...]

CSA Season

Thumbnail image for CSA Season

This is the first year we {as in, me} signed up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  What’s a CSA, you ask?  Basically, it’s a grab bag {box} of veggies delivered fresh from the farm every week.  Or, every other week in our case – we’re splitting a share.  Technically, members support a local farmer [...]

Starting a new Thanksgiving tradition

Thumbnail image for Starting a new Thanksgiving tradition

Thanksgiving is steeped in tradition. Families have gathered for centuries to enjoy the bounty of the Fall harvest. Maybe some of your traditions include gathering at the same home, preparing your fabulous pumpkin pie, enjoying traditional Thanksgiving dishes, watching the football game, traveling home to see family, whatever they may be, breaking tradition is hard [...]

Free Food – All you can forage.

Thumbnail image for Free Food – All you can forage.

This week at the Green Phone Booth I share the story of how I hunt and gathered 17 pounds of free food. I rose early excited with anticipation.  Pulled on the longest socks I had, jeans, tall boots, and a long sleeve shirt.  Grabbed my raincoat and threw on a hat.  Two mesh bags and [...]

Are you loco?

This month’s APLS carnival is all about buying local. I pondered how I could write an intelligent post on all the reasons why you should by local (less fuel miles, supporting small business, creating community, lower environmental impact) without it being a lie. Sure all those reasons are true, but it is a life I [...]

Crimson Tide

This time of year apples are not the only red fruit flooding my kitchen. Cranberries should be flowing into your markets throughout the next few months. In Wisconsin cranberries are big business. Wisconsin produces more cranberries than any other state in the nation and produces more than half of the entire world’s supply of the [...]

NOW YOU’RE COOKIN’: MEATLESS MONDAY {Tofurrific!}

Fresh Tomato Lasagna I am very proud of this meal for several reasons. First, it is home cooked. Second, I made the sauce from scratch! A first for me and quite a feat, I must say. Peeling and seeding tomatoes was an interesting and messy experience. Third, the tomatoes were heirloom, organic, and local purchased [...]
