With Lent just around the corner I think it’s time to get this party started.

Catholics traditionally refrain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent, hence the birth of the Friday Fish Fry in Wisconsin.  We’re not Catholic, but for the past two years my family and I have given up meat, all meat – including fish, during Lent.  This year we will do the same.  You can read a bit about our meatless Lent(s) in my guest post over at Pepperoni Is Not A Vegetable.

What about you?  Do you “do without” during Lent?

Even if you’re not the religious type, I am going to challenge you to do without this year.

Do without

It's our first mini-challenege!

So what will it be?

  • meat
  • plastic
  • deodorant
  • paper towel
  • fabric softener
  • the dryer
  • two degrees of heat
  • television
  • the internet (no, don’t do that one)
  • your car
  • soda
  • sweets
  • shampoo
  • shopping
  • ???

That last one will also be my personal sacrifice this year.  Meat, no problem.  Clothes, now that’s a challenge!

Think of the money you will save.  Think of the waste you will not create.  Think of the bad habit you will kick.

Think of what you will do without for forty days (actually 46) and sign up below!

The Rules
  • The mini-challenge will run from March 9 to April 23.
  • Decide what you will do without and make your pledge.
  • Blog about your experience, be it good or bad.
  • Every Wednesday I will do a “Do without” post and offer a linky for you to link to yours.
  • Grab the “Do without” badge for your blog or your posts about the topic.
  • Link back to this post so others can join.
Make the pledge

For forty days and forty nights, I pledge to Do without…

Sign up by leaving your name/blog name and in parenthesis what you will do without.

For the past 4 or 5 years, I’ve gone without meat during Lent. I’ve already started planning my meals and preparing!

You’re an old pro! I do hope you’ll share some recipes Heidi. Anything other than pasta would be most welcome!

I really like this concept. Maybe I will do sweets?

Speaking of sweets… I should really add soda to my list. I’ve recently become re-addicted to Mountain Dew. Ever since throwback came out I started drinking a can a day again. It keeps me up all night, but I do love it so. Good luck with whatever you decide on!

I’m joining in…now to decide what to give up. I’m leaning toward meat. Or soda. Or maybe both?

Okay. I will put my pious pope hat on and join in. Good thing Nutella doesn’t contain meat.
In addtion, I will not give up coffee, but will give up lattes and mochas. Candy is a given. but not sweets in general.

Wow, I can’t believe that your family is so dedicated to going every day in Lent without meat. I commend you! I am a Catholic, and I usually give up something that is difficult to give up, so that I am reminded of Christ giving up the ultimate for us, His life on the cross. This is what we are to be reminded of when we suffer (and so frivolously here on earth). For this year’s Lent, I’ll continue to give up French Fries which are a huge, horrible, unnecessary, fattening, bad addiction of mine. I am also going to give up wasteful spending at the grocery store and just do WITHOUT the frivolities.

Thanks for a great post and reminder to others about Lent…..it’s not just for Catholics and it would be nice for others to know the benefits of giving up something, which ultimately is to make us all better people.

Blessings and continued positive thoughts for your wonderful blog, Roz at la bella vita

Thanks for the comment Roz. I really do believe an occasional fast, for whatever the reason, is beneficial. It take the focus off of something perhaps we place too much emphasis on and redirects it to other areas of our life. It sure is an eye-opener for me just how much time and resources I dedicate to things that really aren’t all that important. Fasting is a great time for self-reflection and re-evaluating priorities.

Best of luck doing without your french fries!

I think I should join in this endeavor, but what to give up? Coffee is my first instinct, but also my greatest love (other than my family, of course). Do I have the strength? Maybe, but I’ve got a few days to think it over, right?

Sure do Catie, it doesn’t officially start until Wednesday. Of course you’re welcome to join at any time.
